Our Approach

Meeting Teens Where They Are
— Without Judgment

Growing up today is genuinely hard in ways that previous generations did not face. Today's teenagers in Broward County are navigating academic pressure that has intensified dramatically, a social media landscape that makes comparison and exclusion constant and visible, identity questions that are more complex and more openly contested than ever before, family stress, a world that feels genuinely uncertain, and neurological development that makes all of this feel impossibly intense. The adolescent brain — still developing its capacity for emotional regulation, impulse control, and perspective-taking — experiences all of this at full volume. When teenagers struggle, it is not a character deficiency. It is a signal worth taking seriously.

At Building New Pathways in Weston, FL, our adolescent therapists specialize in working with teenagers in ways that actually land — which requires understanding teen culture, respecting adolescent autonomy, and building a genuine therapeutic relationship rather than functioning as another adult authority figure telling them what to do. We use CBT, DBT skills, motivational interviewing, and strengths-based approaches that are specifically adapted for adolescent developmental stages. We don't talk down to teens, and we don't dismiss their experiences as 'just a phase.'

One of the most critical factors in effective teen therapy is confidentiality. Teenagers will only engage genuinely in therapy if they trust that their privacy is protected. At Building New Pathways, we are clear with both teens and parents about what we will and will not share — establishing a framework that gives teens enough safety to actually open up, while also keeping parents appropriately informed about wellbeing and safety. We have navigated this balance with many families throughout Broward County and understand how to make it work for everyone.

Our adolescent therapists are specifically experienced with the unique challenges of this generation: the mental health impacts of social media and comparison culture, the particular pressures of Broward County's academically competitive school environment, the complexity of LGBTQ+ identity development in contexts that may or may not be affirming, and the neurodivergent teen experience — navigating a school system and social world that was not designed for ADHD or autism. We bring both clinical expertise and genuine human understanding to all of this.

Building New Pathways serves teenagers throughout South Florida — Weston, Davie, Pembroke Pines, Cooper City, Plantation, and Fort Lauderdale — with both in-person and telehealth options available throughout Florida. We are a fully LGBTQ+-affirming practice and welcome teens of all backgrounds, identities, and experiences. If your teenager is struggling — or if you're a teen reading this and wondering if therapy might help — we want you to know: you deserve support, you deserve to be genuinely understood, and that is exactly what we're here to offer.

What We Help With

Each transition is unique. Our therapists meet you exactly where you are.

01

Teen Anxiety & Academic Pressure

Test anxiety, perfectionism, college application stress, and performance pressure in Broward County's highly competitive academic environment — among the most common challenges bringing teens to therapy. We provide practical, evidence-based anxiety tools specifically adapted for adolescent experience and lifestyle.

02

Teen Depression & Low Mood

Withdrawal, irritability, loss of interest in things that once mattered, school refusal, and a pervasive flatness — adolescent depression often looks meaningfully different from adult depression and requires age-appropriate, specialized therapeutic support that honors the developmental context.

03

Identity & Self-Esteem

Questions about identity — including gender identity, sexual orientation, cultural belonging, and personal values — deserve a therapeutic space of genuine, unconditional acceptance and exploration without judgment. We provide affirming support for teens navigating identity in all its complexity.

04

Social Media, Technology & Comparison

The unique and well-documented mental health impacts of social media — comparison culture, cyberbullying, FOMO, sleep disruption, and dopamine-driven usage patterns — addressed with practical CBT tools and motivational strategies specifically adapted for teen digital life.

05

Family Conflict & Communication

The push-pull of growing independence, conflict with parents and siblings, and the complex negotiation of a changing family relationship — we work with teens and involve parents appropriately to support healthier family communication and a genuine understanding of what adolescent development requires.

06

Neurodivergent Teen Support

Teens with ADHD, autism, learning differences, or twice-exceptional profiles who are navigating schools and social worlds not designed for them need specialized, affirming support. We provide neurodiversity-informed adolescent therapy that honors your full self.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about life transitions therapy.

Teen therapy is developmentally adapted at every level — the language, the pacing, the activities, and the balance of structure and flexibility all reflect what actually works for adolescent brains and adolescent lives. We respect teen autonomy while also maintaining appropriate parental involvement. We don't talk down to teens or treat them like small adults.

Confidentiality is foundational to effective teen therapy. We maintain teen confidentiality except in situations involving safety — suicidal ideation, abuse, or imminent harm to self or others. We discuss our confidentiality framework clearly and specifically at the start of therapy so both teens and parents understand exactly what to expect.

Start with a parent consultation with us — we can coach you on how to present therapy in a way that's most likely to resonate with your specific teenager. We're also willing to start with a casual, low-pressure first meeting. Some of our strongest therapeutic relationships began with a teen who said they'd never talk to a therapist.

Absolutely, and wholeheartedly. Building New Pathways is a fully LGBTQ+-affirming practice. We welcome and specifically support LGBTQ+ teens and provide identity-affirming therapy that treats every aspect of identity with genuine respect. We are also affirming in our work with the families of LGBTQ+ teens.

Yes. We address the well-documented mental health impacts of social media and technology — comparison culture, cyberbullying, sleep disruption, and problematic usage patterns — using practical CBT and motivational interviewing approaches specifically adapted for teens and the realities of their digital lives.

We typically see adolescents from approximately ages 12–17 in our teen-specific services. Younger children are seen through our Child Services program. Older teens at 17–18 may be seen in either adolescent or young adult services depending on developmental readiness and individual preference, which we assess collaboratively.
