Our Approach

Meeting Children Where They Are
— In Their Language

Children are not small adults. They process emotions, communicate needs, and make sense of their experiences in fundamentally different ways than grown-ups do — and the best child therapy honors this completely. At Building New Pathways in Weston, FL, our child therapists use play therapy, expressive arts, games, and child-directed approaches to create a therapeutic space where children ages 4–12 can communicate, process, and heal in the language that comes most naturally to them: play, creativity, and movement.

Play therapy is not simply playing with a child while asking questions. It is a structured, evidence-based therapeutic approach in which trained therapists use the medium of play to access a child's inner world, facilitate emotional processing, build self-regulation skills, and promote healthy development. When a child repeatedly enacts a scene in play, they may be working through anxiety about their parents' separation. When they choose a particular toy or game, they may be communicating something they cannot yet put into words. Our child therapists are skilled at reading these communications and responding in ways that promote healing without requiring a child to articulate what they're experiencing in adult language.

We always work in close partnership with parents, because parents are the most important people in a child's life — and because children's growth in therapy translates most powerfully into lasting change when parents are meaningfully involved. This means regular parent consultations alongside child sessions, practical strategies and tools to support therapeutic progress at home and school, and transparent communication about themes, patterns, and recommendations. You will never feel left out of your child's therapeutic journey at Building New Pathways.

Our child therapists in Weston also coordinate with schools, pediatricians, and other members of a child's care team when clinically appropriate and with parental permission. For children with ADHD, anxiety, behavioral challenges, or trauma histories, school-based communication can be enormously helpful in creating consistent support across settings. We serve families throughout Broward County — Weston, Davie, Pembroke Pines, Cooper City, Southwest Ranches, and Fort Lauderdale — and offer both in-person and telehealth sessions.

We know that taking your child to therapy can raise questions, uncertainties, and sometimes guilt. Please know that seeking therapeutic support for your child is one of the most loving and proactive things a parent can do. Children who receive appropriate therapeutic support early develop stronger emotional regulation, more resilient self-esteem, and better tools for navigating life's challenges — skills that compound across a lifetime. Our child therapists bring both clinical expertise and genuine warmth to this work, and we take the responsibility of supporting young people seriously.

What We Help With

Each transition is unique. Our therapists meet you exactly where you are.

01

Childhood Anxiety

Separation anxiety, school refusal, generalized worry, phobias, and excessive reassurance-seeking — anxiety in children is among the most common presenting concerns and responds very well to developmentally appropriate CBT and play-based therapeutic approaches when treated early.

02

Behavioral Challenges

Tantrums, aggression, defiance, and impulsivity that seem disproportionate or persistent — we work with both children and their parents to understand the need or emotion beneath the behavior, and develop effective, compassionate strategies that work for your specific child.

03

ADHD & Attention Difficulties

Children with ADHD need support building executive function, emotional regulation, and accurate self-understanding — not just management or compliance. We provide affirming, strengths-based therapy that helps children with ADHD understand their own brains and develop genuine self-advocacy skills.

04

Trauma & Adverse Experiences

Children who have experienced loss, family disruption, abuse, neglect, or other adverse events deserve specialized, gentle, trauma-informed therapeutic support. We use play-based trauma approaches that do not require children to narrate their experiences directly in order to process and heal.

05

Social Difficulties & Peer Relationships

Friendship challenges, social anxiety, peer conflict, and the loneliness of not quite fitting in — we help children build the social awareness, communication skills, and emotional confidence to form and maintain meaningful peer relationships.

06

Family Transitions & Divorce

Changes in the family structure — a new sibling, parental separation or divorce, relocation, or the loss of a loved one — can be profoundly destabilizing for children who need specialized support in processing big feelings they may not have words for.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about life transitions therapy.

We typically work with children ages 4 and up. Below age 4, we often recommend parent-focused work and can provide referrals to infant and toddler mental health specialists in Broward County. Parent-infant therapy and early intervention resources are available for younger children.

Play therapy uses toys, art materials, games, and child-directed activities as the primary medium for therapeutic work. Children naturally communicate through play, and trained play therapists observe and interact with children in ways that facilitate emotional processing, expression, and meaningful change — without requiring children to articulate their feelings in adult language.

Your child's sense of privacy and confidentiality matters enormously — children will only open up in therapy if they trust that the space is safe. We provide regular parent consultations covering themes, progress, and clinical recommendations without disclosing verbatim session content. Safety concerns are always an exception to confidentiality.

Very involved — especially for younger children. Parent involvement significantly improves therapeutic outcomes in child therapy. We typically schedule regular parent consultations alongside child sessions to share strategies, update you on progress, and ensure that the therapeutic work translates meaningfully into everyday home and school life.

This is completely common — children rarely choose therapy themselves. We recommend being honest but low-pressure: something like 'We're going to meet someone who helps kids understand their feelings.' Our therapists are skilled at building genuine rapport with initially reluctant children. Most warm up quickly once they discover that therapy can actually be enjoyable.

Yes, with your explicit permission. We often coordinate with teachers, school counselors, and pediatricians to ensure consistency across settings. School-based communication can be especially helpful for children managing ADHD, anxiety, behavioral challenges, or trauma responses in educational environments.
